As articulated by Amitav Ghosh, the notion of the "probability" of a crisis is a recurring theme in my projects. In other words, how can we imagine something that has yet to occur? For instance, in Surf Cam, a 24-hour live stream of the Southern California coastline echoes a surfing scene from the film Apocalypse Now. In Sunset Watchers, three San Diego local surfers repeatedly reenact a Japanese folk tale centered around the deadly Great Tsunami off the Sanriku coast in 1896. They Won’t Go delves into the construction history of the Hotel del Coronado, exposing both the exploitation and exclusion of immigrant laborers—a situation that, ironically, persists today.
