Artificial Tear

In the tale of Lady Meng Jiangnu, a young woman learns that her husband has died while laboring on the construction of the Great Wall of China. She journeys to the site and, upon arriving, weeps so bitterly that her tears collapse a section of the wall, revealing her husband's entombed bones. In unutterable grief, she throws herself into the river.

This project seeks to reinterpret the story through a non-narrative approach, focusing on Meng Jiangnu's tears as the tale's protagonist. By condensing the ingredients of medical lubricant eye drops, these artificial tears transform into units of building bricks—commodities of the contemporary world. Before her edifice can be fully erected, however, the bricks’ fragile casings begin to weaken. They sag and leak under their own weight until, at last, the entire wall gives way.
